Mission Statement

The Gil and Nancy Voss Marine Invertebrate Collection began around 1943 under the founder, F. G. Walton Smith. It is an internationally recognized, CITES-certified collection of tropical marine invertebrates with an emphasis on western Atlantic collections, and also smaller numbers of species from western Africa and the eastern Pacific. Our mission is to further scientific knowledge and education of marine invertebrates through the sharing and development of invertebrate taxonomic information. The collection, which has few rivals as to number, geographic and depth ranges of Atlantic tropical and deep-sea species, are of exceptional value as research, teaching, reference, and data resources. The collection is comprehensive in nature and a major portion of the material is continually to be identified by leading specialists from around the world. We provide unparalleled access to taxa found in no other collection and are best known for our comprehensive mollusk and scleractinian coral collections.
